Semana Santa

Semana Santa or Holy Week in Mexico or Easter Week, as it is known in the United States. It is a Christian tradition. beginning with Palm Sunday (April 01) and ending with Easter Sunday (April 08, 2012) it is one of the most important religious holidays besides Christmas, in all of Mexico. Many Mexicans observe the week following, Pascua (Resurrection Sunday until the following Saturday) as part of this vacation period as well. Semana Santa celebrates the last days of the Christ's life. Pascua is the celebration of the Christ's Resurrection. It is also the end of the sacrifices of Lent.

Semana Santa gets underway on Palm Sunday when the faithful may join in a special mass which includes the blessing of palm fronds or crosses and other figures that have been fashioned from palms. A large procession commemorating Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem often precedes the mass. Some of the blessed palms are later burned and the ashes reserved by the church for marking the sign of the cross on the foreheads of communicants during Ash Wednesday services the following year.

Considering Mexico is almost 90 percent Catholic there is little surprise as to why it is so reverently celebrated. The other reason is that Mexico enjoys some of the best outdoor activity weather across the country at this time of year. Camping with the family is popular and if there is a beach near by it will be crowded.

Valentine's Day Traditions in Mexico

Mexican culture emphasizes the expression of one's feelings as a part of everyday life. Respect and the emotional value of an individual is very influential in Mexican culture and forms the basis of many Mexican traditions, customs, and societal norms.

A person's feelings are often shown on Valentine's Day through simple gifts and gestures, such as flowers, balloons, and small gifts. Children in Mexican schools often have contests to compose small poems to attach to balloons.

The holiday is often celebrated by decorating with balloons, flowers, hearts, and other symbols of affection. Flower arrangements and gifts are often exchanged, with heart-shaped arrangements made with red roses are a popular item to send and receive in honor of the February 14th holiday.

Flowers are a play a large part in the Mexican Valentine's Day celebration. Flowers and floral arrangements are popular gifts to send and receive to friends, family, and lovers to mark the occasion. Many flowers are also bought for decorative purposes. Elegant dances and balls are also planned in Mexico to celebrate Valentine's Day. Guests dress up and celebrate the holiday together at parties, dances, and balls as a formal way to celebrate and express their emotions for their loved ones.

Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated by many people all over the world as a way to commemorate the affections that people share with friends, family, and loved ones. The Mexican people celebrate Valentine's Day as a special day to honor and commemorate the feelings that they share with one another every day, but with an extra special reason.

Carnival Ensenada - February 16 - 21
.

Brief History of the Carnival
Carnival is an old tradition linked to Lent, which began over 200 years ago during the middle ages. In Christianity, Lent is the period of 40 days that Jesus fasted and prayed in the desert. For this reason many Christians abstained from eating meat and stopped acting their vices during this period. As a result, the Carnival became a time of celebration and to party to excess before the start of Lent. The last day of Carnival is known as Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras or Martes de Carnaval. The first day of Lent is called Ash Wednesday, held 40 days before Easter Sunday.
